*To obtain a birth record in Minnesota, you must complete a MN Birth Certificate Application and
prove tangible interest.  You must provide proof of identity in person or have your signature
notarized if applying by mail.

**To obtain a death record in Minnesota, you must complete a MN Death Certificate Application and
prove tangible interest.  You must provide proof of identity in person or have a your signature
notarized if applying by mail.

Marriage Licenses:           

$115 (without 12 hours of premarital counseling)

$40  (with 12 hours of premarital counseling. Must present educator's statement as per statutory
 requirements at the time of application)

Effective August 1, 2009, both applicants must apply for the marriage license ~ if one party is
unable to apply in person, the absentee applicant will need to complete a 'Supplemental Application'
form. 

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Effective August 1, 2023, legislation no longer allows for a person who has a felony conviction to change their name through the marriage process. The name change process must be completed through the district court.

If you are a current Minnesota Resident, Minnesota Statute 259.10 lays out the requirements for applying for a name change through the district court. Minnesota Statute 259.13 subd 5  allows a person with a felony conviction to apply for a name change through the district court for no fee if the person files the action within 180 days after the marriage. A certified copy of the marriage certificate must be submitted to the court. Click here for information on how to obtain a marriage certificate.

A Marriage License is valid for a period of six months from the date issued.

As per county board resolution on 11-10-09, filing fees will be applicable for the following:

     Ordination $20.00

     Consent for Minor to Marry:  $10.00

     Duplicate Marriage License:  $25.00
